BRINGING 'FABULOUS' TO FABRICS

Sports and technology have always gone hand-in-hand. Without technology, we wouldn’t be able to watch games at the comfort of our couches, nor would we be able to fall back on instant replays when we miss crucial, game-changing moments. While broadcasting has evolved with the times and transformed the way sport is now watched, what of the performing athletes themselves? Do they use technology to enhance performance? The answer, of course, is yes!

Think of it this way – competition at the professional level is at its most intense. Athletes therefore need every ounce of aid in their attempt to boost performance. That’s why over the last couple of decades, sports scientists have been exploring clothing technology to give professionals the edge. Let’s have a look at some of these fabrics.

Moisture-wicking fabrics

Normal clothes, as you may have noticed, absorb sweat off the body. This however causes the fabric to become heavier and often stick to the skin. Moisture-wicking material on the other hand, moves sweat away from the wearer and to the surface of the fabric, allowing the sweat to quickly evaporate. In addition to providing comfort during high-intensity workouts, this fabric also helps prevent chafing – the grazing of the skin caused by constant friction.

Thermal fabrics

As the name suggests, this technology reacts to temperature. In essence, it helps keep the body warm in cold conditions, allowing you to perform at the peak of your strength for longer. If you rely on interval training for regular exercise, thermal clothing is just what you need.

Compression fabrics

From back braces to socks, the primary function of compression fabrics is to tighten around the muscles for better support. If you’re recovering from an injury or looking to protect a part of your body that is prone to injury, this is the fabric you’re looking for.

Reactive fabrics

This fabric is of particular use in contact sports such as football and basketball. The technology is designed to give you utmost flexibility during workouts, but instantly stiffen at the time of impact. What this means is that you can enjoy free and flexible movement without the fear of muscle injuries.

Smart clothing

A nascent technology that is soon likely to compete with wearable devices, smart clothing is the next big innovation in the field of sports clothing. Sensors and microprocessors are embedded within the fabric to help you track heart rate, steps taken, calories burnt, et al. However, it could be a few years before smart clothing becomes a commercial hit, given that they need to be completely wash-friendly.

All said and done, it’s plain to see that we’re leaving no stone unturned to achieve sporting perfection. And with the right sports clothing, you will be one step closer to conquering that elusive feeling.
