WHERE WERE YOU?

A look back at historical moments from the Jockey timeline.

As the collective human race, we possess the most curious need to validate our life’s moments by alluding to pages in world history. We’ve all heard the phrase – where were you when <enter significant historical event> happened? Jockey’s history has seen it be part of many such moments; and  proud protagonists for quite of few too.

First underwear fashion show – 1938

Underwear has always made awkward conversation – especially in the early days of branded innerwear. But way back in 1938, the taboo topic became the talk of the town. ‘The Cellophane Wedding’ as it was dubbed, was one of the first fashion shows dedicated solely to underwear. It featured a couple (models) in transparent garments, with their innerwear on display – causing quite a stir across all major print media of the time.

Endorsed by Babe Ruth – 1946

It’s no secret that Jockey has shied away from celebrity endorsements over the years. In 1946 though, it was a different story altogether. “There is only one Babe”, was a phrase thrown around in the 1940’s, describing the baseball legend Babe Ruth. Capitalizing on his fandom and lore, Jockey promptly roped Ruth in for one of the most iconic underwear ads of all time. “There’s only one Jockey”, read the headline – a quote from the master himself.

Sponsoring the British Olympic Team – 1948

When Great Britain hosted the Olympics in 1948, Jockey was made the official underwear sponsor for the GB team that would go on to win 23 medals. This marked the beginning of the ‘Y-front’ going on to revolutionise innerwear as we now know it. Years later, the brand’s foray into athleticwear wasn’t surprising.

Landing on the moon – 1962

By the 60’s Jockey had become an undisputed brand as far as men’s innerwear went. So it was only logical that NASA approached the innerwear giant to design undergarments for Apollo 11 – the first moon landing mission. The designed product was engineered to keep wearers cool and comfortable while also negating the effects of zero gravity in space. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins would all go on to wear it while setting foot on the moon – before it’s practical usage for active sports was realised a few years later.

That an innerwear company influenced so much culture over the years shouldn’t be surprising. Goes to show how important comfortable and quality underwear is. And with Jockey, you can always trust that you get the very best.
