SOME POP ﹘ ON THE SOCKS, PLEASE

Sometimes, you come across movies that knock your socks off your feet. Other times, it’s the socks in movies that knock you off your feet.

Of trivial matters to obsess over, socks are way at the bottom of the list ﹘ a) they are socks, b) they are not trivial. Sock-obsession is justified, underrated, and more widespread than we care to admit. With that out of the way, here are four of our favourite sock pop-culture moments!

Tom Cruise’s Risky Business dance

Tom Cruise dancing in nothing but a shirt, Jockey shorts, and socks. Paul Brickman had no idea that this happy-dance sequence would turn into a classic moment in movie history.

Something about the shirt-and-socks look is super-liberating ﹘ it just resonates the comfort, sexiness, and freedom that the scene demanded. It’s almost heart-breaking to even imagine the scene without those socks ﹘ but it almost did happen. Turns out, Tom Cruise only put them on as an afterthought because he kept falling from all the strutting that was required of him. He decided to slide instead – hence the socks – and what a delight it was for all of us!

Death of the Wicked Witch of the East

While the ruby slippers are the undeniable stars in Wizard of Oz, the socks aren’t far behind in taking the cake either ﹘ and I’m not talking about Dorothy’s. Her blue silk ankle socks don’t come close to being half as memorable as the Wicked Witch of the West’s knee length, black and white striped ones.

The ruby-black-and-white combination went on to become a statement ﹘ the muse for many a cosplay outfit and halloween decorations. Iconic and intriguing in equal measure, the death of the Wicked Witch of the East was intended to leave a mark ﹘ and I don’t think it’s far-fetched to say that the socks played a big part making it happen.

Ramona Flowers’ aura

The whole aura built around Ramona in Scott Pilgrim v.s the World is that of mystery, eerie vibes, and a strange gracefulness ﹘ and I’d personally like to believe that it were those glorious purple stockings, apart from her hair of course, that made it happen.

Her outfit was nothing short of perfect. The powerful personality couldn’t possibly have been better represented ﹘ the sweaters, jackets, gloves, and shorts were on-point. The stockings, however, contributed so much more to the outfit than we care to give them credit for. Stockings, in general, give inherently ladylike, formal, and sophisticated vibes; by wearing them in funky colors with shorts, Ramona effortlessly represents her character’s very essence in its entirety.

Princess Mia’s pre-princess phase

If you say you haven’t obsessed over Mia’s black knee-high socks and wedge-heeled shoes, you’re either lying, or in denial.

White shirt, short plaid skirt, knee-high socks, and wedged shoes – Mia’s look in Princess Diaries is one that every teenage girl fell in love with. The stocking-and-heels her grandma forced her into, while being sophisticated, come nowhere close to the charm of those classic socks that became a fashion statement in no time. What with almost every girl trying to sport the look at some point, ‘dorky’ became the new ‘cool’.

Movie buffs know this all too well ﹘ they sometimes fan-girl over seemingly irrelevant parts in a movie which no one else seems to care about, but there’s no stopping them. It’s always the little things; which is possibly the reason socks have a designated, cozy niche in our hearts.
